the best way to dip because of the lip

From one end and feed it on a 45° angle. Split the difference and walk the air out. Or dip it straight in till you hit the lip, and change direction and feed the pattern in. Or accept that the pattern is going to be bad on the lip and make it a dark color, and mask it knowing no one will see it under there. Or drill pilot holes along the lip and go in whatever way you want.
