Firearm S/N

Is there any concern with obscuring the serial number of a firearm while painting and dipping? I don't have an FFL, this is my personally owned firearm. I'm in Michigan if that matters.

Yes. You can not obscure a serial number. Usually paint/dip doesn’t cover enough to where you can’t read it. It must be legible if the ATF has to read it. We often time will fill with a paint crayon after we apply the clear topcoat, and it will highlight the number very well.

Firearm laws are federal (FFL is federal firearm license) so doesn’t matter what state you are in. Sometimes states have more strict laws, but they can’t be less strict.

You cannot modify or otherwise make a serial number on a firearm non-legible.

Thanks, guys, I've decided to neatly mask the S/N to avoid any issues. I appreciate the help!
