Did you just scuff all the other areas for adhesion of the paint over the clear? What did you use to wipe the paint/dip away? That's a very cool method.

o, and yes @MidOhioHydrographics, after i painted it red and cleared (and it dried), I used a red scotch pad to scuff the entire thing, so the next later of paint/clear would have something to bite into.

I painted it red, cleared it, painted it silver/dipped.. then wiped the silver/dip off the previous clear.
